Understand What May Be Contributing to Your Headaches

Because your day should not be planned around your next headache.

Recurring headaches can make it difficult to concentrate, work, exercise, sleep, or be fully present with the people who matter to you.

You may have tried resting, stretching, massage, changing pillows, or taking pain relief, only for the headache to return. The problem is that headaches can have different causes and contributing factors. Without understanding your individual presentation, it can be difficult to know what to do next.

At The Chiropractor in Manukau, we assess your headache history, neck movement, posture, muscle tension and relevant lifestyle factors to determine whether there may be a musculoskeletal component to your symptoms.

If chiropractic care is appropriate for you, we will explain your options and create an individual care plan. If your presentation suggests that another healthcare professional would be more appropriate, we will advise you accordingly.

Ready to Better Understand Your Headaches?

Book a Headache Assessment

The Goal Is Not to Make Assumptions. It Is to Understand Your Situation.

A headache is a symptom, not a diagnosis.

Headaches may be associated with factors such as stress, tiredness, poor posture, dehydration, missed meals, migraine, infection, neck tension, injury, or medication overuse. Some headaches are primary headaches, while others may be caused by another health issue.

That is why your first appointment begins with questions and an appropriate physical assessment rather than a predetermined treatment plan.

Our aim is to help answer three important questions:

  1. What may be contributing to your headaches?

  2. Is there a neck, joint, muscular or postural component?

  3. What is the most appropriate next step for you?

COULD YOUR HEADACHE BE RELATED TO YOUR NECK?

Neck-related headaches are sometimes referred to as cervicogenic headaches. These headaches originate from structures in the neck but may be felt in the head.

A musculoskeletal assessment may be worth considering if:

  • Your headache begins around your neck or the base of your skull

  • Your symptoms are accompanied by neck stiffness

  • Turning or holding your head in one position aggravates the pain

  • Your headaches become worse during or after desk work

  • You regularly experience tightness through your neck and shoulders

  • Previous neck strain or injury appears connected with your symptoms

  • Particular postures seem to trigger or worsen the headache

  • Your headaches affect your ability to work, drive, exercise, or sleep

These features do not prove that a headache originates from the neck. A proper assessment is needed to understand your presentation.

TYPES OF HEADACHES

Neck-Related or Cervicogenic Headaches

A cervicogenic headache is associated with a disorder of the cervical spine or the surrounding structures of the neck.

Possible features may include:

  • Pain beginning in the neck or base of the skull

  • Reduced or uncomfortable neck movement

  • Pain aggravated by certain neck positions

  • Head pain occurring alongside neck discomfort

  • Symptoms more noticeable on one side

Published clinical guidance supports spinal manipulation as an option for cervicogenic headache, while treatment decisions should depend on the individual’s assessment and clinical findings.

Tension-Type Headaches

Tension-type headaches may feel like dull pressure or a tight band around the head. They can sometimes occur alongside neck or shoulder tension and may be associated with stress, tiredness, or posture. [healthify.nz], [test.healthify.nz]

Care should be matched to the person rather than relying on one treatment alone. Evidence for spinal manipulation as an isolated intervention for tension-type headache is not conclusive, while newer clinical guidance discusses its use as part of multimodal care. [pubmed.ncb...lm.nih.gov], [ilchiro.org]

Migraine

Migraine commonly involves intense or throbbing pain and may include nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light or sound. Some people also experience visual or sensory changes known as an aura. [healthify.nz], [test.healthify.nz]

Migraine is not simply a neck problem. If you experience migraines, appropriate medical diagnosis and management remain important.

Where relevant, we can assess whether neck mobility, muscle tension, or other musculoskeletal factors may also be contributing to your overall presentation. Chiropractic care should not be presented as a guaranteed cure for migraine.

WHAT HAPPENS AT YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT?

1. We Listen to Your Story

We begin by discussing:

  • Where you feel the pain

  • When your headaches began

  • How frequently they happen

  • How long they usually last

  • Possible triggers

  • Neck pain or stiffness

  • Previous injuries

  • Work and screen habits

  • Sleep and activity patterns

  • Treatment or advice you have previously received

Understanding these details helps us decide whether a chiropractic and musculoskeletal assessment is appropriate.

2. We Assess Relevant Physical Factors

Where clinically appropriate, your examination may consider:

  • Neck movement

  • Joint mobility

  • Posture

  • Muscle tension

  • Movement patterns

We will explain what we are assessing and why.

3. We Explain What We Find

You should leave your appointment with greater clarity, not more confusion.

We will explain:

  • What we observed

  • Whether there appears to be a musculoskeletal component

  • Whether chiropractic care may be appropriate

  • The available care options

  • Any reasonable alternatives

  • Whether medical assessment or referral is recommended

4. We Agree on the Next Step

If care is appropriate and you choose to proceed, your individual plan may include a combination of:

  • Chiropractic care

  • Joint mobilisation

  • Soft-tissue techniques

  • Movement or exercise advice

  • Postural recommendations

  • Workspace or ergonomic guidance

  • Self-management strategies

The exact approach depends on your history, assessment findings, preferences, and clinical suitability.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT HEADACHE TREATMENT

Can a Chiropractor Help With Headaches?

Some headaches may have a musculoskeletal or neck-related component. Chiropractic care may be considered for appropriately assessed cervicogenic headaches and, depending on the circumstances, as part of broader care for other headache presentations.

Results differ between people, and no treatment can guarantee that a headache will resolve.

How Do I Know if My Headache Is Coming From My Neck?

Headaches that occur alongside neck stiffness, restricted movement, pain at the base of the skull, or symptoms aggravated by certain postures may have a neck-related component.

However, symptoms alone cannot confirm the cause. An appropriate assessment is needed.

Can Chiropractic Care Cure Migraines?

Migraine is a neurological headache disorder and should not be described as something chiropractic care can guarantee to cure.

A chiropractor may assess musculoskeletal factors occurring alongside migraine, such as neck discomfort or restricted movement. People with frequent, severe, changing, or disabling migraines should speak with an appropriate healthcare provider.

What Is a Cervicogenic Headache?

A cervicogenic headache is a secondary headache associated with structures in the neck. Pain may be experienced in the head even though the contributing source is within the cervical region.

How Many Appointments Will I Need?

There is no single answer for every patient.

Any recommendation should depend on factors including:

  • Your symptoms and history

  • Assessment findings

  • How long the problem has been present

  • Your response to care

  • Your goals and preferences

We will explain recommendations before you decide whether to proceed.

Will I Receive Treatment at My First Appointment?

That depends on your history, assessment findings, clinical suitability, and informed consent.

In some circumstances, further investigation or referral may be more appropriate than immediate treatment.

Do I Need a GP Referral?

No referral is required to book an appointment. However, we may recommend speaking with your GP or another healthcare provider when clinically appropriate.

Does ACC Cover Headache Treatment?

ACC may contribute when symptoms are associated with an eligible injury. Coverage is not available for every headache presentation, so please ask the clinic about your individual circumstances and applicable fees.

Where Is the Clinic?

The Chiropractor is located at 605D Great South Road, Manukau, Auckland.

IMPORTANT: WHEN TO SEEK URGENT MEDICAL HELP

Most headaches are not caused by a serious health problem, but some symptoms need urgent medical assessment.

Seek immediate medical advice if a headache occurs with symptoms such as:

  • Drowsiness or confusion

  • Weakness in an arm or leg

  • Difficulty waking

  • A seizure

  • Loss of vision

  • Vomiting

  • Neck pain or stiffness

  • A sudden, exceptionally severe headache

  • New neurological symptoms

  • A significant recent head injury

New, severe, persistent, changing, or disabling headaches should be discussed with an appropriate healthcare professional. [healthnz.govt.nz], [healthify.nz], [clinicalgu...nce.org.nz]

Do Not Keep Guessing What Is Causing Your Headaches

You may not yet know whether the problem is connected with your neck, posture, work habits, migraine, muscle tension, or something else.

That is precisely why an individual assessment matters.

At The Chiropractor, our first goal is to understand your presentation. We will explain what we find, discuss whether chiropractic care is suitable, and recommend a sensible next step.
